Hi, I'm Hew. I have enjoyed collecting flow blue, polychrome and transferware since 1970. Alas, it is now necessary for me to simplify life, downsize and make a portion of my collection available to others. I have also placed several pieces in my antique shop booth. My first preference is to sell to my fellow eBayers, so please let me know ASAP if I need to retrieve this piece for you. Cheers! This is an extraordinary and rare piece. It is a large, colorful, venerable oriental scene polychrome Flow Blue red ground Staffordshire pitcher or jug made pre 1850. This interestingly contoured pitcher is 5 1/2" diameter at its widest, 3 3/4" diameter at the foot rim, 3" diameter at the neck, 9 1/4" high at the handle, and 10 1/4 to the top of the finial. It has a unique branch-like handle, wrapped with a serpent. It has a pewter lid, and the finial is also branch-like, keeping with the theme of the handle. The pattern is 'PENANG'. I have had several Penang pieces over the years, but this the only red ground piece I have seen. Also, none of the pieces have ever identified the potter. The under-glaze flow blue transfer and the overpainted polychroming contrasts nicely against the red ground. T is a myriad of colors applied including green, bluegreen, blue, gray, light mustard, purple, peach, and white. Pattern elements are highlighted with gold. The pattern number 9682 is painted on the bottom, and impressed are the separate letters 'W' and 'L'. Several potters utilized an impressed 'W' in the early 1800s. Thomas Wolfe was one such possible potter, and he had a pottery in Liverpool. This venerable pitcher has seen some use (and mishap) over its long life. It has been cracked at the rim on one side (photo 4), though the pewter rim keeps pieces from displacing. The pitcher, nevertheless, displays excellently, especially from the unaffected side. The handle has old gluing. This pitcher remains a rare find, however, I have priced the piece accordingly. The pitcher exhibits a healthy solidness when tapped. I have collected flow blue and polychrome since 1970, but now find it necessary to downsize and simplify my collection. I would recommend that this rare piece be used for display. I have additional pieces in this pattern. In order to keep prices reasonable, I present these listings in a no frills manner. I also avoid playing with Reserve pricing. I strive to set a price that is fair, and to state clear and reasonable shipping costs.Shipping (basic, U.S.) for this substantial pitcher will not exceed $9.50. I always pack carefully, however, insurance is always a good idea, and I will add this unless requested not to. Items can be combined for further savings on shipping.
