T his large piece of Terlingua like calcite is from Coahuila, Mexico. Unlike many Mexican terlingua likes, this one has never been acid treated. It weighs 414 grams and it measures approximately 5 x 2 1/4 x 2 inches. Mexican terlingua like calcite tends to fracture in straight lines whereas Terlingua, Texas calcite does not. It is also in massive form while much of the Texas variety is in crystals Pictures 1-5 were taken under longwave ultraviolet light. Pictures 6-7 were taken under shortwave light. Finally, pictures 9-10 were taken under midwave light. Can this be the same piece of calcite. Yup!!! Most of this type calcite is well known for its long lasting phosphorescence. Picture 8 attempts to captures the phosphorescence when the shortwave lamp is removed. It is bright and long lasting. As with any fluorescent mineral the more powerful the lamp the brighter the fluorescence.
