This piece of uranium ore weighs 34.1g (1.20oz) . This piece displays a bright fluorescent green glow when viewed under either a shortwave or longwave UV lamp. The second fluorescent photo was taken using a longwave UV lamp.On my Geiger counter using a JAN 5979 tube (in a DT-613A probe), I measured 100 CPM with the beta shield closed and 150 CPM with the shield open on the most active surface. I gathered this piece from the ground near the Incline #9 Mine in Emery County, Utah. Information regarding fluorescent specimens The vast majority of fluorescent specimens will only fluoresce when viewed with a filtered shortwave UV lamp. On occasion, I find a specimen that will fluoresce under a longwave lamp, commonly called a blacklight, but these are rare and I will specifically mention it in the description. Most LED lights emit too much visible light to be useful for viewing minerals, as do counterfeit currency detection lamps, germicidal lamps, and similar light sources. My photos are taken using a 6 watt Mineralight UVG-54. I set the exposure settings on the camera in a way to best capture what the rock really looks like. Information regarding radiation measurements Measurements are intended to give potential buyers a rough idea of the activity level of a given specimen. Measurements are recorded in counts per minute, which vary greatly between different tube types and probe styles. I use a large end-window tube for my measurements, which should give a reasonable idea of the response of a Geiger counter equipped with a standard external probe (this probe came from a U.S. Navy PDR-27 series counter). Pancake-style probes will read significantly higher count rates and small Geiger counters with small internal Geiger tubes will generally give significantly lower count rates. For comparison purposes, below is a table that compares the response rates of several different types of tubes against several different samples. The first number for a sample is the CPM reading with the beta (β) shield closed, which means that only gamma (γ) rays will be measured. The second number is the measurement with the beta shield open, which means that alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ) are permitted to reach the tube. The highlighted row is the probe I used to obtain the CPM values in the description of this item.
