MORE ABOUT DEMARCUS WARE: PRO: When the Cowboys drafted DeMarcus Ware with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, they were looking for an explosive, catalytic playmaker on the defensive side of the ball. Two seasons, 19.5 sacks and a starting spot in the Pro Bowl later, it's safe to say Ware has provided just that. In two seasons, Ware has already blossomed into one of the NFL's top young defenders. After a promising rookie season, Ware improved even more in 2006, leading the Cowboys with 11.5 sacks, becoming the first Dallas defender since 1996 (Tony Tolbert 12.0 sacks) to record double digits in sacks in a season. Ware also became the first defensive player since Roy Williams (2002) to score two defensive touchdowns in one season. Ware finished fifth on the Cowboys defense with 82 tackles, but ranked third in solo stops with 61. Ware tied for the team lead with five tackles for loss and easily led the defensive unit with five forced fumbles. Ware's efforts earned him a starting spot in the Pro Bowl for the NFC squad at outside linebacker. Ware was also named second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press and was a first-team All-NFC pick by the Pro Football Writers Association. While Ware is best-noted for his pass-rushing abilities, he displayed his rare athleticism on his two defensive touchdowns in 2006. He showed off his speed by out-running Eagles tight end L.J. Smith on a 69-yard fumble recovery and return for a score in a road loss in October. Ware then made one of the NFL's top defensive plays of the season in Atlanta, snagging a Michael Vick pass in midair and then outrunning the athletic quarterback to the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown. But catching passes isn't exactly a new thing for Ware, who went to Troy University as a 190-pound wide receiver before switching to defensive end as a freshman. After excelling on the Troy defense and becoming one of the most dominating defensive players in school and Sun Belt Conference history, Ware was drafted by the Cowboys in 2005, 11th overall and just one pick ahead of Shawne Merriman, who went to the Chargers with the 12th pick. Ware finished his rookie season with 8.0 sacks, tying Greg Ellis for the team lead and becoming just the second rookie in club history to lead or tie for the team lead (Jimmie Jones 1990) in a season. Ware's eight sacks ranked second in the NFL, behind Merriman, among NFL rookies. And Ware's totals also ranked third in Cowboys history for rookies, behind only Willie Townes (1966) and Harvey Martin (1973), who back had 9.0 sacks each as rookies. But as Ware enters his third season in the league, he has already showcased the athletic skills that once made him a wide receiver and then defensive end in college, as well as a Pro Bowl linebacker in the NFL. Whether it's catching passes, running down quarterbacks or covering tight ends and running backs, Ware seems well on his way to becoming one of the top overall defenders in the league.2006: No Cowboys linebacker had ever recorded more sacks in a single season before Ware finished his second NFL campaign with 11.5 sacks, surpassing Anthony Dickerson's record of 10.5 in 1983. He became the first Cowboys player to record double digits in sacks since defensive end Tony Tolbert had 12.0 in 1996. And after tying for the team l...
