Once again I find myself writing a description for a stunning piece of glassware that just seems to cry out to me... "Don't do this... Don't let me go!!!..." But... being in the autumn of my years... and being surrounded by literally thousands of gorgeous pieces of glassware in my own 50 plus years collection... and having both individual pieces and collections being offered to us on almost a daily basses... I have to face reality... I simply cannot keep every beautiful piece of glassware that I encounter!!!... But believe me... this stunning... tall... Footed Cake Plate... is really tugging at my heartstrings... if you know what I mean!!!... But it's got to go... and so I go!!!... It's unusual to find a Cake Plate that stands this tall... over 6 inches!!!... And it's also unusual to find one that's "square"... 10 and ¼ inches across!!!... And then t's the glass color and the pattern. In this regal beauty the body glass is a... gorgeous... rich "Raspberry Ice"... a glass color that seems to be just about as elusive as it is beautiful!!!... Some collectors would call it a "Depression Pink"... but it's not the pink we would expect to see in a Depression piece. It has just a "pinch" of something in the color that gives it "Raspberry tinge". So we come to call it what it looks like... "Raspberry Ice"!!!... As for the pattern... I've heard this pattern referred to by collectors as... "Elizabeth"... and also as... "Peacock". The correct name may very well be "Elizabeth"... but the design in the pattern... especially on the top area... resembles the spread tail feathers of a Peacock... and so the name "Peacock" has also been used. The 1-½ inch tall "skirted" outer rim carries an assembly of oval "shields"... each acting like a small "magnifying glass". Above this stands a "soft saw tooth" rim or lip... ¼ inch high... to secure cake crumbs... and keep them from "raining down" on the table below. Someone said that if you turned this beauty up side down... you could use it for "chips and dip"... with the dip in the center... and the chips in the lower section. T's a nice 3/4 inch lip that would keep the chips contained. Personally... I like to see it with a three layered... extra moist... banana cake perched right t in the middle... and covered with blanket of peanut butter icing!!!... Ooohhhh... makes my mouth water... but I shudder at the thoughts of all those calories!!!... This is a heavy piece... probably in the 5 or 6 pound range... and it has a nice broad base... almost 6 inches across... to give it a sturdy stance. You won't have to worry about this beauty being "tipsy"... when cutting and serving off this lofty platform. I don't think I mentioned... the condition... it appears to be absolutely perfect. I'm finding no "maker's mark" on this stately Cake Plate... and so it's origin... will have to remain a mystery. Is this a part of "history"???... And if not today... will it be tomorrow???... T's something compelling about owning a piece of "history"... and entire industries have been built to support the human need... to reach back in time... and touch a part of what once was. All collectibles speak of a time past... but not forgotten. T are those among us who grab on to these things out of simple curiosity... others as a hobby... but many as a passion. But the common denominator is the urge to preserve... and to protect... not only the item... but even more so... that time past which it represents!!!... Elegance and practicality... all wrapped up in a single... expression of beauty!!!... Tall in stature... elegant in design... exquisite color... unparalleled craftsmanship... and a treasure forever!!!... What more could we ask for???....
