Forest Scene by Emil Bott (1827-1908). Bott was one of Pittsburgh s principal artists of the mid 1800 s. He was born in Wurtenburg, Germany and brought to America by his father. Bott lived in Phillipsburg (Monaca),PA and returned later to Germany to study painting. Bott moved to Pittsburgh before the Civil War and had a studio downtown. This oil depicts one of his landscape scenes from Western, PA. Signed E.Bott, 84, exteme lower right. Oil on canvas of a forest scene with a dark varnish coating causing the image to be extremely darkened. Purchased in Western PA, similar to other works of Scalp Level artist George Hetzel. Framed oil measures 23 x 29.5 .
