Stunning pair of Forget-Me-Nots Shakers and Lidded Mustard Pot Size: Bowl/lid: 4 3/4" x 4 1/2" ; Shakers: 2 1/2" High & Wide; Sha Condition: Excellent. No Chips, Cracks or Restorations. Marked: Bowl/lid markd RS Germany; Shakers marked in Blue Nippon Hand-Painted Age: According to Kovel's Dictionary of Marks, the mark dates this piece to early Circa 1900 Up for auction are a set of really pretty Forget-Me-Not shakers and a lidded mustard pot or bowl. The pieces are well executed and the blended color hues are reminiscent of the classic Limoges Style. The bright gold and stark blue flowers against a pink blushed background and pure white procelain make it very striking. The origin of how this flower came to be called the forget-me-not is interesting: In the 15th century Germany, it was supposed that the wearers of the flower would not be forgotten by their lovers. Legend has it that in medieval times, a knight and his lady were walking along the side of a river. He picked a posy of flowers, but because of the weight of his armour he fell into the river. As he was drowning he threw the posy to his loved one and shouted "Forget-me-not". This is a flower connected with romance and tragic fate. It was often worn by ladies as a sign of faithfulness and enduring love. It is also told in pious legend that the Christ Child was sitting on Mary 's lap one day and said that he wished that future generations could see them. He touched her eyes and then waved his hand over the ground and blue forget-me-nots appeared, hence the name forget-me-not. What a great gift to give to a cherished love one this holiday season!
