Fornasetti MARYLAND “State Emblem” 4” plate RARE Caviar20 specializes in vintage Fornasetti ceramics, dedicated to pieces created during his lifetime. Part of our enthusiasm derives from the depth and variety of his oeuvre. We regularly find unknown designs that are both surprising and familiar. Beginning in the late 1950’s Fornasetti worked with several American high-end department stores including Bonwitt Teller, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and other elegant regional shops. This plate, an example of the “Emblems of the State” is a curious exception in his work that was likely produced exclusively for the American market. More scholarship is required to determine whether Fornasetti designed 50 state emblem plates or only 8 specific ones. Fornasetti was sold and collected in states such as Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York...but why he choose Oregon and others is unknown. Perhaps he simply liked their emblems? A great gift for someone who adores Italian 20th century design. Fornasetti’s small plates fabulously embellish table tops when entertaining and look great on desks, dressers and consoles. Porcelain. 4”D. Very good condition. Minor gilt loss and marks on the backside. Additional pictures by request. Italy, circa 1960’s Please contact us for more information or images.
