FORT SHAW MONTANA IS LOCATED WEST OF GREAT FALLS IN THE SUN VALLEY. FORT SHAW WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1867 AND WAS MAINLY USED TO PROTECT THE BENTON-HELENA ROAD WHICH WAS THE MAJOR SUPPLY LINE FROM FORT BENTON TO THE GOLD MINING DISTRICTS IN SOUTHWESTERN MONTANA TERRITORY. IN 1891 THE FORT CLOSED AND IN 1892 IT WAS USED FOR THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FOR THE YOUNG NATIVE AMERICANS . THE FORT SHAW INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL AT ONE TIME HAD 300 STUDENTS, 17 FACULITY MEMBERS AND 11 INDIAN ASSISTANTS. THE FORT HAD A 400 SQUARE FOOT PARADE GROUND, A HOSPITAL, A TRADING POST, AND BARRACKS FOR THE OFFICERS AND COULD HOUSE UP TO 450 SOLDIERS. THIS IS A BIG DAY FOR THE INDIAN STUDENTS, "IT'S GRADUATION DAY" THEY WILL RECIEVE THEIR DIPLOMAS FROM THE WHITE MAN AND LIVE A PROSPEROUS LIFE.
