Dear Sir/Madam, Fifty thousand years ago, the North Sea did not exist. The area between what are now the white cliffs of Dover and the Dutch sandy dunes was part of the continent of Europe and the natural habitat of mammoths, cave bears, woolly rhinos and other prehistoric marvels. On these fertile grounds they fed, fought, procreated and died for thousands of years. Then the ice came. The lowering of the earth's temperature at around 25.000 B.C. caused the extinction of these fascinating creatures, their remains being buried by hundreds of meters of ice which covered the whole of northern Europe . Temperatures rose and melt began to set in at around 12.000 B.C., replacing the ice with water and so giving birth to the North Sea as we know it today. The remains of its old inhabitants were still t, however, now covered by a thin layer of sand and fathoms of salty water. Nowadays tidal currents cause the seabed to turn around, freeing the fossils from their sandy tome and causing them to get stuck in the sturdy nets of Dutch fishing boats that leave port every week, facing the dangers of the North Sea , to provide the world with the best that the sea has to offer. Hence Dutch museums and private collections are among the best in the world for the fossilized remains of these prehistoric fauna. Our company, North Sea Fossils, acquires these fossils directly from the fishermen, and it is our aim to make these marvels of nature available to a worldwide market, enabling you to own a part of prehistory or to start a collection of your own. The fossils are carefully preserved following a specially developed method, so they will stay in pristine condition. In the past we have only offered these pieces to museums, specialized private collectors and traders, but with the possibility that eBay offers, we can now enable a more global and diversified public to buy these exquisite pieces. We would presently like you to consider the following item: A Large Piece of a Tusk of a Woolly Mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ). Age: 30.000-50.000 years old Site: North Sea Weight: 19000 gr/42 lbs. Length: 90 cm/35.4 in. Max. Circumference 46 cm/18.1 in. Mammoth tusks are by far the most impressive fossils to have come to us from the Ice Age. Strangely enough, these beautiful items were of little use to the mammoths themselves. The tusks served to show of sexual prowess (size mattered!) but had little extra use, with the exception of snow shuffling and some digging in the earth. The fossil on offer is a long and impressive piece of what was once an enormous tusk, certainly of a fully grown male animal. The piece is nicely curved and wonderfully colored, and must have come from the proximal part of the tusk, since t is a cavity to one side of the tusk through which the veins and nerves used to run. Wonderful milky white and black colors! The fossil is preserved by a specially developed method so it will remain in its excellent condition. Priority shipping will be 43 dollar for Europe and 130 dollar for the rest of the world, including the U.S.A. Paypal makes international payments easy. We require our customers from the E.U. to pay in euros.
