Four Pieces Southern Coin Silver, Raleigh, NC, the first a shell shape sugar spoon with incused mark "J.C. Palmer" and 3 pseudo hallmarks, monogrammed "EM," 6.75"l; the second a small three tine fork with incused mark "J.C. Palmer," monogrammed "EM," 6"l; the third a pair of claw form sugar tongs with incused mark "Palmer & Ramsey," monogrammed "ELM," 6.25"l; the fourth a tablespoon with incused mark "H. Mahler," monogrammed "M," 8.5"l 4.6 total troy ozs. John C. Palmer was born in Hawfields, Orange County, N.C. on April 9, 1806. He apprenticed to John Y. Savage of Raleigh until moving on to Oxford, Haywood, and then Salisbury with his own firm. In 1840, Palmer moved to Raleigh where he opened a shop as silversmith, jeweler, and daguerreotype gallery. In 1847 Palmer and Walter J. Ramsey formed a partnership lasting until 1855, at which time Palmer purchased Ramsey's interest. He continued the business, however, the main focus shifted to the jewelry business. Henry Mahler was a prominent silversmith and jeweler also located in downtown Raleigh, N.C.
