Quite fine nineteenth century four-poster mahogany bed. This bed came to Tangibilities directly from the Pennsylvania family in whose homes it had been kept it for decades. They had brought the bed with them in their move from Philadelphia to western Pennsylvania. The bed has been well cared for, retains its original finish and displays a rich patina. The four posts are equally turned and carved and can accommodate a canopy frame. The top or cap of each post lifts off to expose a small pin which can secure a corner of a canopy frame. The headboard is paneled and skillfully carved along the top as the photos show. The four rails are set with hand-turned knobs for rope. The rails are joined to the posts with mortise and tenon joints and secured with bedstead bolts. The bolts appear hand-wrought as the heads are not identically cut and the lengths of the bolts varies. Iron or steel hangers have been attached by screws to the interior of the side rails to accommodate box springs and mattress. The posts are 85" in height and were made from single stock measuring about 5" thick. The side rails are 74" in length excluding the tenons at either end. The head rail, the foot rail and the headboard measure 50" in length exclusive of the tenons. This is a fine, original antique bedstead with no parts missing.
