Four Years with General Lee :Being a Summary of the more Important Events touching the Career of General Robert E. Lee, in the War Between the States; Together with an authorative statement of the Army which he commanded in the field. By Walter H. Taylor of his Staff, and late Adjutant-General of the Army of Northern Virginia. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 539 & 551 Broadway, 1878. 199 pages. Dedicated to Eight Thousand Veterans who were present 9th of April, 1865. T are 14 chapters that cover Lee's career from the earliest days of the War in Richmond and northwest Virginia [now West Virginia]. Chapter 14 is mostly facts and figures about troop strength in specific battles and in each division. The last section is an address by Captain John Hampden Chamberlain delivered in Richmond in 1876 on the anniversary of Lee's Birth. Walter Herron Taylor (1838-1916) was born in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from VMI in 1857. He was a banker and merchant in Norfolk before the War. During the Civil War hr was Lee's chief aide-de-camp who wrote dispatches and orders and delivered many personally. He also "screened" Lee's visitors and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel [see photograph]. After the War he returned to Norfolk wher he was again a banker, railroad director, land developer and State Senator 1869-1873. He became a major "answer man" in the continuing War "disputes" by former Confederates. He was proded to write a book which he did but since it was mostly just "facts" it was not well received. Condition. *** A little "bumping" on top and bottom spine and wear on the covers edges. Front piece of General Lee is intact. Pages are clean and no tears*** Insurance available. A great Civil War book. ***I've had several people contact me about buying the book at the reserve price or less but AFTER the auction. So I'm relisting this. I'm not going under $99.99 and if nobody wants it, it goes back on the shelf***
