FRAGMENT OF ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT
Dates circa 1350 Country of origin: Unknown
*RED & BLUE INK ON BOTH SIDES*
Presented here is a truly lovely fragment of an illuminated medieval manuscript, which dates circa 1350. Vellum. Stands about 6 inches tall and just over 4 inches wide. Features numerous stunning red and blue ink initials on both sides. Approximately 30+ lines of manuscript text on each side. I have been unable to determine precisely what document or work this manuscript is part of, but from my research based on the phrases of latin text I can decipher it appears to be part of a legal document of sorts (very typical of this time period). Some overall browning and staining consistent with its age. The colored ink appears to have generally withstood the test of time better than the black ink-- however a good number of words and phrases nonetheless remain legible on the recto, less so on the verso. Overall a highly desirable item, worthy of further research to determine more about its origin, but undoubtedly an elegant and scarcely encountered object in this sort of price range.
