Great for Genealogy. 1887 Indian Territory OKLAHOMA Facts (from the informational page (photo below) glued to the back of the frame) : Portion of the great Louisiana Purchase set apart for home of peaceable Indian Tribes; organized as a territory in 1834. Most important town, and capital of the Cherokees, is Tahlequah. Railroad Mileage: 372 miles of railway. Principal Rivers: the Arkansas River and the Red River. Number of agencies and reservations: 22. Tishomingo is the capital of the Chickasaws. Tushkahoma is the capital of the Choctaws. Muscogee is the capital of the Creeks. Pawhuska is the capital of the Osages. The Seminole Agency is the capital of the Seminoles, and Pawnee Agency the capital of the Pawnees. Stringent laws to protect from encroachments by whites. Whites can hold land only by marrying into one of the tribes. Recent official reports give Indian population about 80,000.
