Framed Civil War Soldier Portrait Daguerreotype w Case Extremely unique, this antique 1850s Piece features a daguerreotype of a young Civil War soldier in uniform that is ornately framed in a brass gilded oval mat and frame; this unit is encased in a fancy decorated black pressed paper? (wood?) case with a crimson lining echoing the exterior design. T is a "U" hoop closure on one end, but no hinges on the opposing side of the case. Overall the case measures 3 5/8´H x 3 1/87" W x 5/8" D and the exterior has wear around the edges of the case revealing a tan base. The interior is in good condition, the pressed velvet lid lining is nicely decorated with no signs of wear. The Image is securely glass encased under the fancy brass mat & secured by the filet frame. The oval image size is 2 ¾" H x 2 ¼" W. The daguerreotype is in good condition, clean and clear, noting a few spots in the background that does not detract from the subject. Also noted is minor loss of color and wear to the red material perimeter surrounding the frame and black covering at the left side exterior. It however remains a wonderful and authentic historical Civil War photo ---fabulous for display and great for a collection.
