(1751-1836, President 1809-1817), one page, quarto, Washington, December 27, 1809, addressed to the Reverend William Bentley. Bentley (1715-1819) a Salem, Massachusetts minister and diarist, had evidently requested information about the relationship between Madison and John Stark for his weekly columns in the Salem newspaper. In his reply, Madison notes his sincere .... esteem for Stark. This letter followed closely on a warm, and personal letter written by Madison to Stark one day before, on December 26, in which he wrote to the old Revolutionary War hero offering this expression of the sense I have always entertained of your character, and of the part you bore as a hero and patriot in establishing the independence of our country. Both Madison`s original letter and Stark`s reply are noted in The Papers of James Madison, edited by Hutchinson, et. al. (1962- ). Archivally framed with an engraving of Madison, 15.5 x 19.5`.
