Franciscan Ware, or Franciscan Pottery as it was first named in 1934, was manufactured by Gladding-McBean and Company of Glendale, CA. Scores of different styles and patterns were produced. In 1962 Gladding McBean and Company merged with the Lock Joint Pipe Company and became Interpace. The Franciscan line continued in California until 1984 when the facility at Glendale was closed and all production moved to England (and later some patterns/pieces were produced in Japan, China and Portugal). Several of the older patterns are still being produced in England by various divisions of Waterford Wedgwood but their look and size is slightly different. It is important to note that not all pieces carry the "Franciscan" mark. Unless you are familiar with a particular pattern, you may not recognize it as "Franciscan." Franciscan's Apple pattern is one of the most popular patterns. It is also one of the hand-painted designs. This pattern is one of the older ones, first appearing in 1940. This pottery has a cream background with an apple and leaf border. Although Franciscan is no longer manufacturing pottery in California, the Franciscan Apple pattern continues to be produced in England. Pieces with the California backstamp are the older, more desirable pieces is a vintage collection of Franciscan dinnerware from California. T are a total of 24 pieces. A nice start of what could become a large collection! Four 10 3/4" dinner plates. Four 6 1/2" snack plates. Four 6" saucers. Four coffee cups. Four 6" bowls. Four 5 1/4" bowls. T are four 6-piece settings. They are vividly colored. A couple of pieces have chips on their underside, and one plate has a surface chip. (see pics). Some of them have scuff marks from use, and some have some crazing. T are several types of Franciscan stamps on their bottoms.
