Up for auction is a wonderful covered butter dish inFranciscan’s Starburst pattern in mint condition with shiny glaze and no chips, cracks or utensil marks. This covered butter dish was offered in Franciscan’s Gladding McBean line from the mid-1950s. We purchased this item from an estate, and although many of the Franciscan items we purchased have seen many years of loving use, this covered butter dish looks as though it was kept on the shelf these past 50-plus years! The butter dish is 8” long and 5” wide. Both the cover and the under-dish are in great shape. This dish bears the old Gladding McBean mark, which I understand was introduced in 1954 and made through 1957 (although some sources think it may have continued to have been produced into the 1960s). The futuristic design – elliptical plates, with atomic starbursts – was perfect for the new kitchen designs of the 1950s and a great sign of the optimistic post-war prosperity. Franciscan’s Starburst pattern today is perfect for the mid-century modern home or the Eames-era collector. as we offer free professional packing, shipping and insurance for your purchase.
