Up for auction are two cups and saucers in Franciscan’sStarburst pattern in great used condition with shiny glaze and no chips, cracksor utensil marks. One cup has a couple barely discernible tiny flea bites to the glaze along the rim that are difficult to see (we’ve tried our best to photograph them). The other three pieces in this set are pristine. These pieces were offered in Franciscan’s Gladding McBean line from the mid-1950s. The cups are 3 ¼ “ in diameter and 2 ¼” tall. The saucers are elliptical in shape, about 6” in diameter. These bear the old Gladding McBean mark, which I understand was introduced in 1954 and made through 1957 (although some sources think it may have continued to have been produced into the 1960s). The futuristic design – elliptical plates, with atomic starbursts – was perfect for the new kitchen designs of the 1950s and a great sign of the optimistic post-war prosperity. Franciscan’s Starburst pattern today is perfect for the mid-century modern home or the Eames-era collector. as we offer free professional packing, shipping and insurance for your purchase.
