French listed artist Francois Claudius Compte-Calix, 1813-1880. Art dimensions: 10.5 inches high x 8.13 inches wide. This lovely watercolor painting depicts two women by a tree, one is reading and the other is carving something into the bark of the tree. Old wood frame with gesso and gold leaf moldings. The molding has an outer edge of rope style detail, the center detail is egg and oval, the inner face is lambs tongue. There is a brass plate with the artists' name. Wear and dings on the frame appropriate to the age. The watercolor is in excellent condition. Works by this artist have sold for up to $5,500 for medium format paintings.
