Frank Lloyd Wright Original Unitarian Church Seat Plywood bench seating was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright specifically for the Meeting House of the First Unitarian Church of Madison, WI. The bench seating provided primary seating for the congregation for over 30 years. Newer, exact reproductions are now used and these original bench seats were sold off in the early 1990's, which is when this bench was purchased from the First Unitarian Church. The seat is constructed of oak plywood that was pre-cut at Taliesin and assembled at the First Unitarian Church by apprentices the direction of Mr. Wright in 1951. The seat measures 21" square. The seat cushion and backing is denim-like, aqua blue material which has been replaced since the seat was constructed. The First Unitarian Church indicated the original upholstery likely still exists beneath the back cushion, although I have not confirmed this. I hand-picked this seat from about a dozen that were being offered for sale. This one was in the best shape when it was purchased in 1991. It has been displayed in my home since then and has not been used as a chair nor has had any additonal wear and tear. I have a signed letter from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation authenticating the church seats and benches that were offered for sale by the First Unitarian Church in the early 1990's. I paid $1,600 for this single seat. This price was set at 15% less than the $1,900 auction price the seats garnered at Christie's in 1986. I have included a copy of this letter along with a correspondence that the Unitarian Church contact sent me in April 1990. Prefer US shipping & buyer. Will insure for sale value when shipped.
