This is a large heavy Victorian Repousse Vase. ca. 1896 or earlier. Measures 16 1/4" tall and 4 to 4 1/2" wide. Weighs 32 oz. on my postage scales. Note it is engraved with family initials. EMcM. Swirls and leaves Repousse design. Marked Sterling 5876 and the Frank M. Whiting Co mark that has the w in a circle and a bird. This mark was not used after 1896. Hard to see this and difficult for it to come through in the picture. Excellent condition with no dents. Very heavy duty Sterling. Thick and heavy. Needs polishing. Good Luck. Please e-mail any questions. This item is from the McMillin/Bryce Estate. I will have many other unique and ornate antique Sterling Silver pieces up on Ebay during the next two months as I liquidate this estate. Items from the 1800's to early 1900's. Huge collection of Sterling Silver Flatware, Platters, Candleabras, Tea sets, Vanity Sets, Bowls, and other unusual Sterling items. Many of the items are monogramed with their initials. I thought it would be interesting to share some history of this family. Please add me to your favorite sellers list and check back during the next 6-8 weeks as I continue to add more items. ( Maybe not during Christmas and New Years, but the liquidation of this estate will continue through January and until all sold. ) History: John McMillin was the owner and captain of the river boat the Silver Wave. He and his ship were instrumental in ending the blockade at Vicksburg . (See Sherman 's autobiography, the Steele Bayou episode, win the good captain's name is misspelled.) After the war Captain McMillin returned to his home Pittsburgh w he patented the first successful steam capstan. His fortune was made by suing those miscreants who failed to pay royalties. Fortune in hand he married and produced two children. One, a daughter died in childhood. The other was the family heir, Albion Steele McMillin. The good captain died of a heart attack in his late forties. It was then discovered that his son also suffered from a defective heart. For his health Albion was sent to the West Coast, traveled the world extensively and was renowned for his conversation (he hardly spoke but listened attentively while puffing his cigar). Albion married into the Bryce family (of Bryce Brothers now Lenox ) and produced three daughters. The youngest was Emily Bryce McMillin Terry the late owner of the items now offered on line. Picture #4 shows inside the base - hollow area. This is w the Sterling and other marks are. This vase is not weighted. This is a beautiful heavy and thick Sterling Silver Vase.
