Franklin Library FULL leather top-of-the-line edition of "The Bold and Magnificent Dream: America's Founding Years, 1492-1815, by Bruce Catton and William B. Catton, illustrated by Dennis Lyall, one of the FIRST EDITION SOCIETY series, published in in 1978 with Fascimile 'Signatures' by both Cattons. Bound in a Most Handsome smooth dark brown Moroccan cowhide, the book has matching French moire silk endleaves, satin book marker, hubbed spines, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges--in near FINE condition. Written by a father/son team, Bruce Catton, who was born in 1899 in Petoskey, Michigan, died in his beloved Michigan in 1978, just having completed the manuscript for this work. His son, William, was born in Cleveland, OHIO, in 1926. William Catton is the Charles Dana Professor of American History and Chair at Middlebury College in Vermont. The Cattons' book is the history of an idea, an idea that begins centuries before Columbus, in prophesies, despair, and dreams. The title is from PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER'S inaugual invocation of a "bold and magnificent dream." This fine book is the history of the United States from Columbus to 1815--including the MAYFLOWER, JAMESTOWN, REVOLUTIONARY WAR, the LOUISIANA PURCHASE, WAR OF 1812, the Marquis de Lafette, George Washington, James Madison, and James Monrow.
