Franklin Library FULL leather edition of Homer's "The Iliad," and "The Odyssey," In Contemporary Verse by Robert Fitzgerald, Limited editions, two of the 100 GREATEST BOOKS OF ALL TIME series, published in 1976. Bound in a Most Handsome black leather, the books have gold French moire silk end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for minor imperfection to gilt. Homer lived around 850 BCE or later. "The Iliad" is set during the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states. The epic tells of the battles and events during the quarrel between King AGAMEMNON, leader of the GREEK armies and the warrior ACHILLES, son of the goddess THETIS and the mortal king, PELEUS, in the Greek's efforts to get back Agamemnon's brother, MENELAUS' wife, HELEN. Although the story covers only the first 52 days in the ten-year war, "The Iliad" describes many of the Greek sieges; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning.
