FRANKLIN LIBRARY JOHN STEINBECK Tortilla Flat Of Mice and Men Cannery Row Illustrated by Herbert Tauss Beautiful Topgrain Leather Limited Edition FROM "THE COLLECTED STORIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITERS" The three novels in this collection – Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men , and Cannery Row – are Steinbeck classics. They were written between 1935 and 1945 – a difficult period for America, which was moving from a devastating depression to a horrible world war, but a decade when Steinbeck’s genius was at its apex. These stories embody the unique characteristics that make Steinbeck’s novels unforgettable – the rounded characters, the accurate and lively dialogues, the vivid California settings, the provocative philosophies, the drama and humor of the human condition. Tortilla Flat is concerned with human dignity and the harsh –though sometimes humorous – realities of life. It is the novel that established Steinbeck’s passionate views about the world’s dispossessed. The main characters of Tortilla Flat are paisanos, who live uphill in a fishing and farming community near Monterey, California. Extremely proud of their heritage, “a mixture of Spanish, Indian, Mexican and assorted Caucasian bloods,” they have been in this area for more than a hundred years, constantly going against the mainstream. They manage to live without the niceties, responsibilities and encumbrances that modern society demands; they want nothing to do with “the system.” Since they have “nothing that can be stolen, exploited, or mortgaged, that system has not attacked them vigorously.” Tortilla Flat is the witty, refreshing, often joyful tale of its hero Danny and his friends. Danny has recently returned from his World War I army stint, which he spent training mules in Texas, to discover that he has inherited two small houses from his grandfather. Danny shares his windfall with his friends and, at first, they thrive, managing to sustain their uninhibited, carefree lifestyle. But, as Danny’s close friend Pilon observes: “The worry of property was settling on Danny’s face. No more in life would that face be free of care.” And soon, the conflicts that responsibility has brought with it force Danny and his friends into a series of poignant, often funny and ultimately sorrowful episodes that culminate in the elevation of Danny, his property and his friends to the stature of mythical figures. Of Mice and Men , a story that represents “the inarticulate and powerful yearning of all men,” focuses on two poor and lonely migrant farm workers – George and Lennie. George, the “brain,” assumed responsibility for Lennie after the powerful but “dim-witted” man’s only relative died. They have unlikely relationship, but it is through these two characters that Of Mice and Men develops into a warm, tender and finally tragic story. George feels superior to other men of his station, because he has a partner who is a continuing responsibility, and because he has a dream for them of “a little house and a couple of acres.” But Lennie has a tragic flaw – his love for soft things conflicts with his enormous strength: he crushes what he only means to pet. The stage is set for tragedy when George and Lennie find work at a farm where the young wife of the evil-tempered boss’s son enjoys tempting the hired help. The story that unfolds is heartbreaking, and hauntingly beautiful. In 1944 a war-weary Steinbeck wrote Cannery Row , his lyric elegy to a world before it went mad. At the time, Steinbeck was working on a novel about World War II. However, his years as a foreign correspondent on the battlefields of Europe had so disheartened him that he couldn’t bring himself to finish it. Instead he returned to the subject he loved best: human potential not yet captured and sterilized into efficiency by a mechanized society. Cannery Row is set in a section of Monterey, California, where the canning of sardines is the majo...
