Franklin Library: Signed: Benjamin and Mary Spock: Spock on Spock: A Memoir of Growing Up with the Century Franklin Library FULL leather top-of-the-line edition of Benjamin Spock's "Spock on Spock: A Memoir of Growing Up with the Century," PERSONALLY SIGNED by both BENJAMIN SPOCK and his wife, MARY MORGAN, one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION SOCIETY series, published in 1989---a Very Limited copy with a "double signature." Bound in a Most Handsome navy blue Moroccan cowhide, the book has decorative endleaves, hubbed spines, satin bookmarker, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Benjamin Spock was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1903 and died in 1998. He was a man for all children--the most trusted pediatrician and best-selling author of all time. As the eldest of six children, Benjamin McLane Spock was immersed in the world of childcare at an early age, helping to change diapers, babysit, feed, and otherwise attend to his siblings. His parents, a prominent lawyer and a devoted mother, ran a strict household and harbored high expectations for their offspring. Benjamin Spock readily absorbed these standards, attending Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then YALE University. At Yale, Spock studied literature and history and excelled in athletics, even earning a spot on the Olympic rowing crew that won a gold medal at the 1924 games. He attended the Yale School of Medicine for two years and then transferred to Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, w he graduated first in his class in 1929. By that time, he had married Jane Cheney and soon had two sons, Michael and John. While specializing in pediatrics, Spock studied psychoanalysis for six years, making him the only practicing pediatrician of his time with this combination of training. In 1946, he published "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care." During Spock's lifetime, his book would be translated into 39 languages and sell more than 50 million copies, making it second in sales only to the Bible. As his celebrity grew in the 1950s and '60s, Spock worked feverishly on behalf of children and parents. He taught child development at Case Western Reserve University. He even had a television program devoted to the concerns of families. Dr. Spock had become a household name. In 1976, he married his second wife, Mary Morgan, an ARKANSAN, who became a valued collaborator. They traveled the country, lecturing and writing, and co-authored the memoir "Spock on Spock." A man who witnessed the birth of the automobile as well as the Internet, Spock prided himself in keeping up with the times. During WORLD WAR II, Spock was drafted into the NAVY, and served as an M.D. He has been a contributing editor to REDBOOK magazine since 1963. Spock has also written on VIETNAM, RAISING CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT TIMES, and DR. SPOCK ON PARENTING. We learn of Spock's years as a Navy doctor, his receiving an honorary doctorate from DURHAM University along with CHARLEY CHAPLIN, and his marching with DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING in protest to the Vietnam War in Chicago in 1967. Spock was later called before the HOUSE ON UNAMERICAN Activities during the HOOVER reign as head of FBI. The reader learns of his meeting with Daniel Ortega in NICARAGUA in 1984. Spock became the "lightening rod" of dissent in later years.
