Franklin Library: Signed: Muriel Spark: The Only Problem
Franklin Library FULL leather top-of-the-line edition of Muriel Spark's "The Only Problem," Illustrated by Vivienne Flesher, a First edition, PERSONALLY SIGNED by MURIEL SPARK, one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION SOCIETY series, published in 1984. Bound in a Most Handsome moroccan leather, the book has gilt on three edges, a satin book marker, hubbed spines---in FINE condition. Dame Muriel Spark, who lived from 1918-2006, was an award-winning Scottish novelist. She was born in EDINBURGH, to a JEWISH father and an English mother, and was educated at James Gillespie's High School for Girls. In 1934–35 she took a course in "Commercial correspondence and précis writing" at Heriot-Watt College. She taught English for a brief time and then worked as a secretary in a department store. In 1937, she married Sidney Oswald Spark, and soon followed him to RHODESIA (now ZIMBABWE). Their son Robin was born in July 1938. Within months she discovered that her husband was a manic depressive prone to violent outbursts. In 1940 Spark left Sidney and Robin. She returned to the United Kingdom in 1944 and worked in intelligence during WORLD WAR II. She provided money at regular intervals to support her son. Spark has written a volume of Collected Poems. "The Only Problem" reflects her strong interest in the Biblical book of Job. The protagonist, Harvey Gotham, a very rich man, like Job himself, is a studious type. Like Job, Harvey cannot understand why God has afflicted him with a series of misfortunes. After the WORLD TRADE CENTER bombing of 9/11----this work would be such a "conforting" book---because Spark asks the 'eternal questions' of "who is man" and "what is his purpose" on earth. Spark says she was inspired by the beautiful painting JOB VISITED BY HIS WIFE by Georges de La Tour which stands in the art museum in Epinal in the Vosges district of France. FOLKS, this is a MAGNIFICENT book----by one of SCOTLAND'S finest modern writers---and with DAME Spark's death in 2006---even more valuable! FREE SHIPPING in U.S. with media postage or $10.00 priority shipping--or actual charges world-wide. Seller accepts PayPal or personal checks---held until bank clears---or immediate shipment with 50 positive feedbacks on Ebay. Good luck and see my other Easton Press and Franklin Library books.
