Franklin Library: Theodore Dreiser: An American Tragedy Franklin Library FULL leather top-of-the-line edition of Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy," a Limited edition, Illustrated with Drawings by Hubert Davis, one of the 100 GREATEST MASTERPIECES OF AMERICAN LITERATURE series, published in 1979. Bound in a Most Handsome brown Moroccan cowhide, the book has brown French moire silk end leaves, hubbed spine, satin book marker, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Theodore Dreiser, who lived from 1871-1945, was born in TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, the ninth child in a family of twelve, to a German-born immigrant, an unbending Catholic. His mother was a gentle, illiterate, Ohio-born woman who managed to hold the household together. Dresier attended the University of Indiana---Bloomington. Published in 1925, "An American Tragedy" was Dreiser's sixth novel. H.L. Mencken praised the book's emotional power. Clarence Darrow was stirred by its "fanatical devotion to truth," and proclaimed Dresiser "a master of tragedy." Joseph Wood Krutch called it "the greatest American novel of our generation." The novel was based on a true news story in 1906 when the son of a poor evangelist who ran a mission murdered a woman when she told him she was pregnant and was demanding marriage.
