Yet the mystery of the convertible version is far less familiar and more of a modern day urban legend. Indeed several examples exist today, likely the result of custom fabrication at the hands of both experts and enthusiasts. Was there ever a legitimate convertible fashioned from a production hard top? And did the Ford Motor Company ever produce one? Today the research might say yes AND no. As has been discovered over time, the history and origin of their construction, color schemes, and trim details vary by several noted historians and personal accounts. As early as 1953, Ford was working on the Continental Mark II project. This unique automobile would showcase the very best in American automotive styling and grace. Plans were also made to produce a version of the car in four-door configuration and to option a retractable hard top. As history books on the subject reveal, the car was very costly to produce. Ford was said to have lost $1,000 per unit but they exceeded their goal to build 2000 cars in its first year, resulting in 2550 for the 1956 model
