Franklin Mint Fifty-State Bicentennial Medals collection. This set was issued over the years 1972-1976 and celebrates the 200th Anniversary of American Independence. Each medal is a Limited Edition Proof, 39 mm in diameter and struck in Sterling Silver (.925 fine). Each of these medals weighs 1.03364 troy oz., with a total actual silver weight (ASW) of 47.8 troy oz. for the 50 medals. Silver has been hovering around $13.00 per ounce; tfore, at that price these medals contain $621.40 worth of silver. A nationwide art competition was held to select the obverse design of the 50 medals, with a first prize winner selected for each state. Each medal is a prize-winning work of art, and the complete collection reflects the special character of each of our United Sates. The reverse design of each medal was selected by The Bicentennial Commission of that state. T was a mintage of 20,440 sets, with an original issue price of $625.00. The collection is housed in a beautiful custom designed blue album issued by the Franklin Mint. You will also receive a smaller binder with an explanation of each first-prize-winning medal design and the design that appears on the reverse of each medal. T are also brief biographies of each of the winning artists. Each medal was purchased in their year of issue and the set has been locked away since then.
