The evolution of Harley's Heritage Softail Classic is a good example of "Harley" attitude. Harley started w/a hard tail frame. For pure looks, nothing beat it. Without the busy look of conventional shock absorbers, the hardtail design gave the aft end of the bike a cleaner & meaner look. Of course without rear suspension, the frame quickly taught each rider the origin of the name "Hardtail"

So a softer ride made sense....the end result....they mounted a pair of gas shock absorbers vertically under the transmission, totally out of sight.
