Brevet Major General LorenzoThomas Abraham Lincoln's Civil War Adjutant General and Andrew Johnson's " Temporary " Secretary of War Major General Roger Jones U.S. Army Adjutant General (1825-1852) Current Adjutant General Writes Future A.G. Roger Jones (1789-1852) was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1809, and made first lieutenant shortly thereafter. In 1812 he resigned to accept a commission as a captain of artillery in the United States Army, and in just 13 years had risen through the ranks to become the U.S. Army's powerful and influential Adjutant General, a position he held until his death in 1852. Another term for this position could be " Chief Administrative Office ." He fought in the War of 1812 , the Battle of Lundy's Lane , and the Battle of Chippewa . His son Roger would later serve as Inspector General of the U.S. Army (1888-1889). Upon his death in 1852, Roger Jones would be succeeded as Adjutant General by Samuel Cooper , who held the position until 1861 when he was replaced by Lorenzo Thomas . Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875) was born in Newcastle, Delaware into a proud military family. His father, Evan was of Welsh extraction, and served in the militia during the War of 1812 , and one of his uncles was a favorite officer of General George Washington . In 1823, Lorenzo graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry. . He saw action in the (Second) Seminole War and served as General William O. Butler's chief of staff in the Mexican War . Thomas then became General Winfield Scott's chief of staff until the outbreak of the Civil War . In March 1861 he was named Abraham Lincoln's Adjutant-General and, two months later, given the rank of brigadier-general . In March 1863, as punishment for alleged inadequacy, he lost his status as adjutant (while retaining his rank) and was assigned to organize black troops in the South. After the war he was breveted a major-general in recognition of his military service, and he would retain the position until 1869. What makes this document unique is the fact that it is written from the sitting Adjutant General, to his future successor -- and neither knew it at the time!
