FRENCH 1874 GRAS BAYONET 1876Antique French Bayonet with scabbard made in 1876 with engraved blade. The engraving on the blade is written in French and says Mrs d' Ormes de St. Etienne gbue 1876The blade looks to have been well used and has nicks and abrasions. There are two identical indentations on the blade one on either side near the hilt in the exact same position. I have seen this once before on this type of bayonet on another sales site.The scabbard is blued and has scale on it. There are stamps on each of three sides of the ball finial on the chape.The "blade-breaker" quillon has a serial number and four different factory stamps.The locket has a serial number and some type of stamp under the pin. The front of the locket has three stamps one of them being the number 33.On the ricasso are two stamps one of them being an M in a circle.On three sides of the crosspiece there are four stampsThe bayonet is about 26 inches long with scabbard and about25 and 3/8 inches long without scabbardThe lock mechanism on the pommel on the inside has some numbers stamped in it.This bayonet was the last of the French "sword-type" bayonets.
