This is a "Long-Knife" or sword bayonet which has a 15 3/4 inch fullered blade. These were used beginning in 1892 and used up until about 1913; so they were really not a WW I weapon. They were manufactured by various French arsenals to fit the Model 1892 Mannlicher-Berthier Short Rifle. It replaced the French Model 1886 "Lebel" Bayonet. Due to it's short manufacture time, these are some of the rarest French bayonets of this period in history. These bayonets are extremely well made of highly tempered steel; and can be easily identified by their third "fullered groove" on the back leading edge, opposite the cutting edge. The fullers, or "blood grooves", as they are refered to; are much deeper than on most other bayonets, and the blade has a very unique "indexing notch" milled into blade on both sides which is intended for better retention in the scabbard. This First Pattern 1892 has been arsenal "modified" removing the hooked "blade breaker" quillon; as modern warfare saw those as obsolete. The overall condition of this bayonet is excellent, except for some light pitting w the age darkened spots are on the blade, but the blade has not been abused in any way.
