MIRUS with Elysian figures The little Mirus woodburner was one of France's most popular stoves between the wars. This is one of the less common designs and features Diana and Apollo, with the torch of liberty on the loading door instead of the usual olive branch. The legs are also different - very different. The twiggy branches refering to the rustic architecture of Arcadia. It is interesting how neo-classicism flourished during this period along with Art Nouveau and modernism.The enamelled cast iron case is a rich shade of deep blue, the end panel with the goddess Diana, has come out too light in the photo. I think the nicks to the enamel show well in the pictures, around the loading door and one on Diana's hip.The stove has been run by us and is suitable for light or occasional use. A perforation to the rear plate has been filled, the rest of the firebox appears sound as are the refractory bricks that form the hearth, a missing pane of mica has been replaced. Very obviously, it has lost its decorative top lid sometime in the last 75 years. You could use it as a coffee table when it is not burning by the addition of a piece of slate, for example.Wood is loaded via the door on the right end, the rate of burn is regulated by the slide type air control at the base of the door.
