Exhibition of 'The Poteries of Jaunes et Vertes' on display and for purchase at Galerie Zama, Greenwich, CT. Bonjour A Tous,An early 19thC rare Grand Terrine d'Alsace. The grand terrines of Alsace were produced..one at a time with incredible attention to detail and design until the 1860s. The late 19thC saw simpler forms that could be produced in mass quantities until the next design came into being. These giant poteries from the early 19thC are truly something to regard. They have a warmth that accomplishes the task of a true ambiance d'autrefois (another time). The pieces were incredibly detailed and worked on by one potier for several days. This terrine , which has a photo in Demey's book; Terres Vernissees d'Alsace, has detailed anses (handles) that were applied at the same time as the main body was being formed. The rounded edges that are in symmetry with the lid are remarkable. The warm, thick mellow deep mustard glaze is one of the most beautiful I have found on possibly any Terrine d'Aslace. It has all the age that makes it stunning and is in perfect condition. The clay of Alsace was bought by many poterie ateliers throughout France for a period during the 19thC as it was known as the hardiest and most heat-resistant. Thus, the years of holding warm food or cooking dishes in the stove has given this piece extraordinary hues and beauty. A piece this size was mainly used for cooking/serving 'Choucroute', a traditional dish of Alsace. These giant terrines are no longer found in the US and for the most part, except in collections,.in France. You can find many of the early 20thC terrines selling for euro prices...but not a rare 'Authentic' piece like this. Jusy under 15 inches L, 8 inches W and 7 inches H....it is a piece to grab if you love this genre. It would sell for $700 and up in any reputable shop. I am basing my price on what I paid in 1996!!!! Bonne Chance...Eddie....owner, Jaunes et Vertes: Antique Pottery de France.................We have many items at our shop and site Jaunesetvertes (site filled with rare pieces and more coming!!!! ) for the best collection of confit pots and cruches on the web!**Come check out our 'Collection' link on the main menu at after p[erusing the poteries.
