We've extended our Sale into April with many items at 25 to 35% off! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~Group of 7 Matched Antique French Rebus Plates~ This is a group of 7 French faience dessert plates in black on a cream ground with an exceptional Cobalt blue floral border. This group would have originally been part of a set of 12 plates but complete sets of this type are now exceedingly rare. It is actually quite unusual to find a matched group of over even 5 or 6 so this is a relatively rare group as well. This type of plate originated in France in the early 19th century. We know Montereau was making them as early as 1800. Virtually always they were part of a set of 12, (occasionally 24), and were intended for use as dessert plates where they would have provided entertainment for family or friends after a copious French meal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are many themes for this type of dessert plate but the Rebus theme is perhaps the most highly sought after, I think because of its 'strange' and interesting graphic quality. Still one sees decorating this type of plate, the exploits of Napoleon and Joan of Arc, the 12 months of the year, views of Paris , London or Lourdes, military and Bibical scenes, country scenes, French folk proverbs, trips to exotic places, ' la chasse' or hunting scenes, Aesops fables, a country marriage, and so on. Quite often the theme will be humourous in some way. Makers of this type of plate would include Luneville, Longwy, Creil et Montereau, Gien, St-Amand, Digoin et Sarreguemines, St Clement, H B & cie, Paillard et Hautin of Choisy-le-Roi and Bordeaux-Vieillard, who made this group. Most all these makers produced several series of Rebus plates over the decades which were very popular then as they still are today. These plates feature a quotation or 'maxim' that must be worked out from the picture clues at the center of each plate. If one knows a bit of French it is quite fun to try to work out the quotation. The answer to the riddle is given on the back of the plate. This particular type of plate is now quite rare because usually they were much handled, especially by children, who would have been amused after finishing their dessert by working out the rebus. One must imagine how quite often they would have slipped out of the clumsy and sticky fingers of a giggling child--or a 'tipsy' adult--or been dropped by a very weary serving girl. Their rariety is further a function of their age which is well over100 years. The mark found on these plates dates them to c. 1860. All these plates are in excellent antique condition with 2 having small chips at the back and one with a hairline crack. None of the plates have been broken and glued. All have a 'vintage patina' which is normal for their age. Antique plates with a Rebus theme of this age are now highly collectable in France and worldwide. ******************** This exceptional and rare group hung together would make a highly sophisticated and decorative French acc...
