French Art Nouveau Bronze Pro Patria WWI & Lion Medal, GRANDHOMMEDescriptionThis lovely bronze medal has as its centerpiece a young man with a rifle next to a woman with her right arm around his shoulder--she surely represents France, and he, the soldiers fighting for the nation. In the background, there is a battle scene from war, and at the base the words "Pro Patria". The artist's name, Grandhomme, also appears.The obverse is also a lovely design, with a wonderfully detailed lion. The artist's name appears again, along the date 1911 and the indication that this medal was awarded by the Ministry of War.The edge contains the imprint of the word "bronze" along with the appropriate French mark. This medal has a diameter of about 50 mm and weighs 62 grams. (F3642)Paul Victor Grandhomme was born in 1851 in Paris and died in 1944 in Saint -Briac -sur -Mer , Ille -et-Vilain. In addition to being a well respected French medalist, he was a painter enameller , goldsmith and engraver.He apprenticed to Auguste Mollard (1836 -1916) , goldsmith and painter on enamel. He was influenced by his friend the painter Raphael Collin .He worked with Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824 - 1898) and Jules -Élie Delaunay ( 1828-1891 ) .In 1874 he presented at the Salon of French artists an enameled portrait Vittoria Colonna ( 1490-1547 ) .In 1877, he studied read more
