This handsome oak French Breton Two Drawer Side Table from the mid 19th century, has a deep and rich dark color. Its splendid Gothic style was evidence of the makers ability to execute perfect proportion with scale. As you explore the carvings which cover every part of this table, you'll appreciate the tremendous amount of workmanship that was given to this piece. All four sides have been finished, allowing it to function as a free standing center table or library table. From top to bottom and front to back, you'll see where hand and design worked together in harmony. Note the iron hardware pulls in the image of a Medieval Gothic Cross. They appear slightly curved to the right, where constant use over the last 100 plus years has given them their distinct look. The close up of the drawer front shows the careful attention to detail, whereby even the background of the tracery work has been stippled. The spiraled carved legs rest on a block form with an incised star cut pattern resting on a bun foot. Each leg is topped with a capital that imitates the lines and look of a cathedral window. The apron is more reserved with a simplistic quatrefoil pattern. The finish although not original, indicates quite a bit of age with its darkened crevices and natural patina.
