RARE FRENCH BRONZE STATUESCULPTURE HELMSMAN c1900
Magnificent French Bronze* (spelter, rigule) figure depicts a rugged sailor behind the ship’s wheel standing on a small ship with a time piece inset into the base. It is titled “Helmsman” on the metal name plate attached to the front of the base. The base is rushing water, seashells and crabs! There is no signature that I can find but the sailor does bear a striking resemblance to a sculpture by Antoine Bofill c1895-1925 listed in Volume Two of Berman Bronzes, Sculptors and Founders. This sculpture is in great condition for a piece this old. It could use a good cleaning, has minor wear in some places and a minor break in the metal where a small piece of the sail attaches to the boat but does not detract from the beauty or the stability of the piece. (Please see photos) The original clock has been replaced with a newer battery operated quartz clock which keeps good time. The clock needs to be re-glued in place as it just sits in the hole. It would be nice to find an older clock that fit. This statue would display very nicely along side of Art Deco and Art Nouveau decore. I used to display it by my fireplace, but it would go just as well in your foyer, study or at the beach house! This sculpture is large!! It is 29” tall and about 13” wide. It has FRANCE in raised letters on the ships bow. The size is very unusual. Most French statues of this era are in the 12” to 18” range. Very few were cast larger. The Helmsman is one of the rarer ones. In the 13 years I have been buying and selling on eBay I have never seen another one. This piece is very large and heavy and will be packed with care to prevent damage. As seller I will pay for insurance and tracking. * "French Bronze," also known as "spelter;" is strong & durable & stands up to the ravages of time without deteriorating.
