Rare Chantilly Drug Jar
A rare Chantilly baluster shaped apothecary jar, decorated with a kakiemon branch to one side, the other with a cartouche of reeds and red berried vines.
Circa 1735
An example in the British Museum is illustrated in Drey's book on Apothecary jars, where he states that ..."some seventeen members of the series have been recorded" - making this an exceptionally rare alberello, apothecary, pharmaceutical drug jar.
As an example of the uncommon French porcelian factory of Chantilly, it is unusual in that it has both a wonderful Kakiemon design copied from a Japanese 17th century ceramic design, and a European wreath together on the same vessel. It is only in these rare pieces this mixing of styles takes place.
The body is wonderfully creamy, and well potted, typical of Chantilly of this early period. The lack of a lid such as the British Museum example does not detract: it is a complete enough form in itself.
