Large French mirror, 22 karat gold leaf, water gilding and oil gilding. Circa 1870's, Napoleon III era. The ornament is applied composition ornament on a white wood base. The mirror has been restored as on third of the ornament was missing. The finish is a traditional oil painted finish surrounding the areas of gold leaf. The red clay bole shows through the accent panels, which still have a thin layer of the original gold leaf. As you move around the mirror, the red shadows through the sheen of gold, from some angles the gold is what you see, from some the red. The pieced hand chamfered wood back and the mercury silvered glass are original. The flower details on the corners and rounded edges are orginal, but the shell and flower garlands at the top and the scroll corners have been replaced with traditional composition ornament pieces that match the orginal sculpture in appearance and composition. This mirror is quite heavy as the plate glass is almost 1/4' thick, and the frame itself is quite sturdy. The inner beaded edge has turned slightly in towards the mirror at the top right, and the frame joint had opened, but has been repaired and refilled. Weight: 85 lbs, dimensions: 71 inches high at the center x 41 inches wide by 3 inches deep at the side flowers, slightly deeper at the center shell. The back was partially removed for the photograph, but is complete. Some age marks on mirror, but no distortion. This is quite a lovely piece, and would look beautiful over a large mantel or console, or in an entry hall!
