~FRENCH VINTAGE LINENS AND ANTIQUES~ W YOU WILL FIND BEAUTIFUL AND UNUSUAL VINTAGE LINENS AND APPAREL FROM FRANCE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~VINTAGE FRENCH MARRIAGE--EXQUISITE ~ This is a rare, beautiful and very elegant vintage sheet found in France. Because I found it the odds are that it is French, but I think because of its exceptional oppulence it may be Italian or perhaps Spanish. In any case it is a truly gorgeous work of art . Sheets of this quality and condition are exceptionally rare. I am pleased to be able to offer this beautiful item to those customers who truly appreciate elegance and fine handwork. This particular sheet is genuinely of the very highest quality for a dowry sheet. It is just lovely. This sheet is made of a fine tight-weave linen/cotton fabric which is pale cream in color. This sheet is exceptional for its entirely hand done Embroidered Cutwork Border (called "Richlieu" in French) which adorns the entire length of the top edge and turns the corner at the upper edge to extend along both sides for about 29 inches-- this is called a "retour" in French. Only the finest quality sheets have this feature so that when the sheet is turned down on the bed the border design is visible at the bottom of the turned back sheet edge. The delicately scrolled border is further enhanced with inserts of Richlieu work and with dainty open work flowers and leaves to make an exceptionally rich over-all impression. The exceptionally beautiful and large monogram at the center reads "J C" . These initials are entertwined with French knots, flowers and leaves which are amazingly detailed. The over all effect is elegant and rich. This sheet is remarkable for the quality and quantity of handwork, which represents countless hours of work by a skilled seamstress. This type of fine European handwork has all but entirely disappeared, never to be repeated. This beautiful sheet measures 80 inches by 120 inches and t is no center seam. These sheets were generally made for the trousseau of a French bride and other European brides by mothers, grandmothers or in some cases by convent nuns. This sheet is certainly the work of a highly skilled embroiderer which suggest the latter. Often these French trousseau items were rarely if ever used and were stored away for decades in the family armoire. I am very conservative about suggesting that a vintage item I sell has not been used so I cannot be sure in this case but this sheet is in virtually pristine condition with no signs of wear at all. It does have two very tiny marks which I show in the photos but other than these the sheet is flawless. One seems to be a minute rust spot--pin head size and the other is a very faint pale pink spot of about one quarter inch. I have washed the sheet but have not bleached it. Normally I would hardly mention such tiny flaws like these but the generally Truly Exceptional quality and tfore the price of this Beautiful Sheet make me feel bound to do so. This Fabulous Sheet would be a beautiful addition to your own bedroom, or would make a magnificent and unusual gift for a new bride. As with all the items we sell, this stunning sheet will be delivered to you freshly laundered and ironed. As well, all our items are shipped with laundering and care instructions. FVL #0079 SHIPPING: I ship internationally by French post. Shipping by French Post for this item will be $35.00 I am happy to do combined item shipping to save you extra costs on multiple item orders. The combined shipping cost for two sheets is $60.00. For three, $80.00. INSURANCE: Suggested and available by request. I would strongly urge the buyer of this item to insure it for shipping. Cost would be $5.00 Comments on the Condition of the items I sell: Virtually all the items I sell are "vintage" which means they have, in the majority of cases, been used, and are at least 50 to 75, and even 100 years...
