A V ery Old large Antique FRENCH Tapestry Inspired AFTER DANIEL RIDGWAY KNIGHT painting of "The Harvest". This is a beautiful antique French Tapestry . I am not a professional tapestry collector so I can only assume it is an early one. It is an e xquisite Tapestry Lovely detail throughout. This remarkable tapestry is beautiful in wonderfully tones of light persimmons, ochre’s, light umber to charcoal gray, soft olive green, and dusky warm shades of peach. This lovely scene is quite pretty. Antique tapestry that measures approx. 56 inches tall and 66" in length. It is labeled at bottom "apres Ridgway Knight" This is a beautiful Vintage tapestry , please see pictures for details. The scene is a beautiful and detailed. It is remnescint of French tapestries often portraying scenes of French PEASANT life. Such is the case with this fine tapestry, which depicts the rural scene . The fine detailing, skilful use of color and engaging composition is a classic French PEASANT scene. I believe this is a early FRENCH AUBUSSON FRENCH TAPESTRY . It is inspired AFTER DANIEL RIDGWAY KNIGHT painting of The Harvest. American painter Daniel Ridgway Knight captures the life of the working class . The range depth and vitality of his work placed Knight among France's most beloved painters of the pastoral landscape. His artistic genius is illustrated throughout this magnificent work, confirming his place among the masters of 19th-century art. Born in Pennsylvania, Knight spent most of his life as an American expatriate working abroad in Paris. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts in 1861. There he had the unique opportunity to work with many celebrated artists including Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Charles Gleyre. The rural theme of this tapestry is typical of Knight’s work from about 1875. It shows his open-air naturalism . The quaint costumed women are detailed carefully, while surrounding landscape is treated in lovely manner. Such depiction of peasants were extremely popular in the late nineteenth century and reflect middle-class attitudes about the rural lower class. Peasants were popularly conceived as living in harmony with nature,. THIS TAPESTRY based on Knight’s painting of a Harvest is with the peasant's activities – – take place out of doors, in their their humble garments, so genteel is their behavior. Like numerous other paintings of peasants from this periods it is with the working women and the virtuous life of toil and faith . There is no major damage and nice even fading, no stains or odor. Some wear to the edges. Good condition for the item of this age! This one will be in perfect with antiques . “Tapestries have long been collected for their ability to transform even the most humble of homes into a castle. No one knows exactly when the first tapestries were made, but by the 1600's, they had become a popular and useful form of textile art. The early French Verdures owed their distinction to the use of an all-over pattern of foliage, however, over time the designs improved to incorporate landscapes and wildlife. The more elaborate and detailed the design the more expensive and desirable the Tapestry.” This would be dramatic hung over a mantle – It has subtle background of foliage decorated and enhanced with a rolling rural landscape.
