It's our March Madness 'Choose What You Want to be on Sale' Sale... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~French Sheet with Matching Cases in Finest Linen with Exceptionally Rich Embroidery ~ ~~~~~~~~~~ This weekend I visited a large Antiques Show not terribly far from where we live. Always when I attend these shows, I know there will be several French 'Linens Ladies' as I call them, who bring beautiful and fine things to these shows. There will be tables of beautifully displayed sheets, tablecloths with matching napkins in damask, maybe some beautiful things for babies...but too often I just don't find what I hope for. There might be a beautiful sheet, for example, with elegant embroidery of the type I look for, but when we open it up for inspection, there may be stains, or holes, or the center has been worn thin. Sometimes the measurements are not adequate, and so on. Even occasionally the price is just too high for me to consider...as vintage and antique sheets of this quality become more and more rare, the prices have gone up and up. Too often I come away empty-handed and disappointed...but not this time. At this show I found this gorgeous sheet (with matching cases!!) and it is just what I search for. It is in beautiul condition, the embroidery is rich and generous, and of top quality and this sheet is of a generous size...and although it wasn't 'inexpensive' I brought it home for those of our customers who look for the finest. ~ Made of the very finest linen of high thread count ( 'fil de lin' in French ), this sheet, and its matching European style cases, is of the highest quality. The linen fabric is 'fluid' and irons smooth and crisp, and draps beautifully. This sheet and its matching cases are snowy white. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This sheet does not have a monogram, but there is hardly room for one so rich and extensive is the embroidery all across the border of this beautiful piece. The center motif is a large 'ribbon' elegantly tied in a French bow which has been worked in Richelieu cutwork embroidery... a very demanding embroidery technique even for a skilled needlewoman. The center bow, which symbolizes the union of the bride and groom, is surrounded by sprays of wheat which symbolize fertility, and so is an appropriate motif for a marriage sheet which this is. The heads of wheat are so beautifully worked as to seem 'drawn' with a needle....the finest level of embroidery. The 'ribbon' extends from the center where there are more bows and sprays of lovely spring flowers. To my mind this sheet has a lively and 'young' exuberance...just charming, and yet so elegant. And as a bonus, this sheet has two very fine matching European-style cases. Here the embroidery is more restrained with the motifs of the sheet worked in minature in one corner of each case. It is as if the embroiderer wanted the sheet itself to be the center of attention. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This very fine French linen sheet is in superb vintage condition. I find no signs of wear, or other issues. The cases too are in what appears to be virtually unused condition because they show absolutely no strain at the corners which always is a mark of a much used case. As well all the original buttons are in place and the linen of both the cases is still weighty and even. The only slight flaw I see in the entire set is that one case has had two very tiny repairs near the embroide...
