This plongeon (a very straightforward name as the pitcher would have been plonged into the water of the village fountain in order to fill it) or cruche is very old dating from the early 1900's and was made here in the Agenais region between Toulouse and Bordeaux the Southwest of France. It was made as all those lovely Art Populaire pots from France are made: by hand, by a local artisan potter to sell to his immediate neighbors. Aside from its fantastic glazing there is the simple fact of its size. It measures 12.5 inches tall and is 9 inches from spout to handle. As usual the French couldn't help but make something beautiful. It has some missing glazing and has some chipping especially around the spout but at around 120 years old what can you expect.
