This fully hand painted fresco is a reproduction of one of the most famous examples of portraiture discovered in Pompeii; it is known worldwide and has been the subject of much artistic scrutiny since its discovery among the ruins of this once thriving seaside city. It is an idealized, almost academically formal portrait of a young girl whose delicately molded features and tranquil gaze suggest that she belongs to a patrician family, both wealthy and educated. The rounded background accentuates the beauty of the girl, captured by the artist in a meditative moment, as she seems paused to begin recording some thought or intimate emotion on the wax tablet she is holding, with the stylus pressed to her lips. It is among our most sought after reproductions. Discovered at Pompeii and now preserved in the Museo Nazionale, Naples, Italy.
This is a fully hand painted Buon Fresco by classically trained Italian artists. The Fresco is painted on wet plaster that has been layered on a canvas stretched on a simple wooden frame. Because it is created by hand, there are slight variations, and no two copies are exactly alike. Preserving Cultural Heritage This stunning modern masterpieces is created by master and apprentice artists using the same techniques as Michelangelo centuries ago. Each piece is created in the ancient method of painting pigment into wet plaster dating from 800 B.C., known as the buon fresco method. A Russian canvas is stretched and treated with a very thin layer of cement to imitate the wall surface. An outline is prepared as in the ancient process and then pigments are brushed into the wet plaster. Plaster allows a mixture of natural earth pigment and marble dust to be painted into the wet surface. The colors and tones of the frescos are muted, like the marble tones that are used to paint it, imitating the original wall painting. The only difference between the canvas fresco and the wall is that our cracks are intentional! Once dried, it is sealed with a microscopic finish to preserve its beauty for a lifetime of enjoyment. Like any fine work of art, these Frescos should be treated carefully. You can read more about the ancient art of fresco painting at . Weight: 12.00 Shipping Time: Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
