Original Hokusai (1760 - 1849) Japanese Woodblock Series; Thirty-six Views of Fuji Second Edition, Eijudo Publisher Release, circa 1860 The Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji- At age 69, the great Hokusai launched the most challenging project of his artistic career, the print series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji." This series was then, and is still today, the most acclaimed landscape series of ukiyo-e. Hokusai combined his ingenious design sense with a series of prints embracing the power, beauty and symbolism of Mt. Fuji -- Japan 's sacred mountain. Whatever the setting, Fuji stands serene and unmoved by changes in the natural or human condition. This contrast between endurance and transience deeply touched the audience of these prints. The mountain appears in all conditions; dawn, sunset, mist, rain, snow, from far away and nearby always a serene symbol of the beauty and power of Japan. Second Edition Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji prints- These beautiful prints from Hokusai's Fuji series are some of the most famous images of ukiyo-e. Hokusai's original series was released by the publisher Eijudo from 1829 - 1833. They were an immediate hit and Hokusai's fans waited patiently for the next print in the series as each came on the market. After Hokusai's death, in the mid 19th century, Eijudo released a second edition printing of the Fuji series. The second edition was printed with some of the original blocks and some repaired and recarved blocks when the original blocks were no longer useful. Our lovely set of prints offered this evening comes from this second edition printing circa 1860. These wonderful prints are a great choice for a collector looking to add a unique print to add to a collection. They are rarely found on the market. A nice opportunity to round out a collector or as beautiful 19th century prints to display in any room. Bid now! Comments- A famous scene of the fisherman casting his net into the turbulent waters, Fuji in the near distance, only the summit seen above the fog. A beautiful print with a symmetrical composition: the lines of Fuji and the lines of the craggy rock and fishing line creating a triangular shape. With fine color and detail, this would make for an excellent display. Artist- Hokusai (1760 - 1849)Image size- 14 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown Condition- In nice condition overall with excellent original color and fine detail. The print was folded vertically by the publisher for presentation, now flattened. Slight rubbing at reverse edges from folio mounting, not noticeable from front, slightly thinned in rubbed area (reverse only). A paper remnant at reverse, right edge, about 1 1/2 inches wide, from folio mounting, not an issuefrom front. Nice overall. Note; We strive to provide the best woodblock print photos on the net.
