How were these prints done? These beautiful woodblock reprints were done exactly as the originals. An artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. These old reprints are sought after for their meticulous attention to detail and color, rivaling the originals. Unlike the brighter, souvenir prints seen on the market these fine reprints show the attention to detail and careful color choices intended to exactly replicate the old originals.

Fujiwara Playing the Flute by Moonlight

Yoshitoshi - Yoshitoshi was the most influential artist of Meiji era Japan. His prints shimmer with energy and bring to life the tales of ancient Japan. Tragic love stories, the downfall of the once mighty, untouchable beauty, military conquests, and slices of everyday life. Yoshitoshi had the heart of a storyteller, spinning his tales and twisting the outcome to suit his art. He also had the immense talent of a woodblock master, bringing emotion and elegance to an image on paper.

Comments- This image is indisputably Yoshitoshi's masterpiece. The print is an illustration of an old tale. Yasumasa is being followed by his brother who is intent on stealing Yasumasa's robe. The brother is enchanted by the Yasumasa's flute and follows him home instead. This incredible design shows Yasumasa in the center panel in a dramatic pose with robes billowing, the brother off to the right side and a full moon and cloudy sky in the background.

This print is a 20th century woodblock reproduction of Yoshitoshi's original. It stands out in it's fantastic detail, wonderful rich color (emulating the original) and beautiful print quality. This Yoshitoshi is so rare and sought after and is very rarely sold. It brings $5,000 - $10,000 usually at the international auction houses. As that is beyond the means of most collectors, this print is an opportunity to own a fine reproduction and have a true Japanese masterpiece in the home.
